Surrounded by adorable children

Day 2 in the clinic today was really great and all of us got to experience many wonderful kids that just make you want to smile. Most of them so cute you just want to grab them and take them home. I (Mary) got to give a little girl new SMOs (supramalleolar orthoses), and little boy with CP a new stroller.  Another interesting case was a little girl with microcephaly (small brain) who also needed a new stroller.  It was phenominal because this girl was 3 years old but looked 18 months because she was so small. I finally was able to work hands on with a 18 month old boy with spina bifida. He was a ham and loved the camera with the biggest smile ever.  We all had similar expericenes, however there was one case that was just bizzarre.  Courtney's first patient of the day was a young man who had a grade 2 gastroc strain. The bizzarre part was that he was casted above the ankle! For those of you who may not know why this is odd, I will tell you.  The point of a cast is to immobilize the joint that the muscle crosses to prevent that muscle from working so it can heal...well, if the cast does not include the ankle/foot then you will not immobilize anything! The calf muscle will still be able to contract. The solution...remove the cast and give the guy a walking boot, problem solved.

Another part of our day included sending off part of the team to small town 5 hrs away and at an elevation of 12,000ft.  Let's just say that they will be bundling up with the average temp being in the 30s. Some of those people include Becca, Sam, and Chris. You will get to hear about their adventure when they get back on Thrusday. Their mission is to hand out tons of wheelchairs to people there who have been on a waiting list. Please pray for them as they will be at a much higher altitude and in much colder weather than they are use to being in which may predispose them to being sick.  Also pray that the people there are blessed by the equipment that they will recieve.

When I came to Peru, I thought that I would most likely be eating a lot of Peruvian cuisine. So far all of our meals have been prepared by a peruvian and they have been wonderful! For lunch we had yummy quinoa with chicken and broccoli. Tonight, Domino's Pizza. Since half the team is gone we went for the most simple of meals. But we still had Peru in our meal because one of the PTs made a very spicy hot sauce from scratch to warm our mouths and give us a little taste of what true Peruvians use with their food.

Stay tuned for our adventure tomorrow as we go on a hike to a beautiful waterfall on our day off! Chau!

Mary
